The effectiveness of inoculative releases of Phytoseiuluspersimilis Athias-Henriot for control of twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, has been demonstrated on cucumbers in glasshouses (Hussey et al. 1965. Hussey and Bravenboer 1971) and on field-grown strawberries (Oatman et al. 1968). A critical factor afecting the feasibility of using this predaceous mite on a commercial scale is its cost of mass-production. At present P. persimilis can be reared only on tetranychid mites, which must be reared on plants. Therefore, it is important to efficiently utilize the prey so as to obtain the maximum yield of predators. Reported here are results of a study to determine the optimum amount and stage of prey for rapid increase of this predator. |
